Reconstruction under way on the Filippino islands
Reconstruction is under way on the islands of Cagraray, Batan and Rapu-Rapu following the devastation of Typhoon Durian that hit the country in late November 06. Every school on these three islands in Albay Province, (500 classrooms) was either badly damaged or totally destroyed. While much of the relief effort concentrated on immediate needs like food, water and shelter, these areas did not receive reconstruction assistance until recently.
Irish Aid through Plan Ireland and Plan Philippines will provide €150,000 for the rebuilding of 6 totally damaged and 12 partially damaged classrooms. School equipment, furniture and teachers packs will also provided. In addition, the project will include support disaster related education for over 1200 families. The reconstruction of the remaining classrooms on the islands is being support by the Filippino, Swedish and Canadian governments.
