What we do

Plan's strength lies in our ability to work with a wide range of groups across all levels of society, the depth of our experience and knowledge, and our commitment to share learning and best practice. This means:

Working with children:

for example, raising awareness of their rights; encouraging their participation; building confidence to speak out and take action; reducing prejudice and marginalisation

Working with individual communities:

for example, bringing children, women and men from all social backgrounds together, creating a forum to identify development priorities and adequate action; enabling access to support from governments and local organisations; developing the skills and organisational capacity to implement, manage and sustain projects

Working with local and national governments:

for example, reinforcing their obligations and encouraging increased resources; encouraging a commitment to address inequality, poverty and marginalisation; integrating Plan programs with local and national initiatives; influencing policy; creating opportunities for children's voices to be heard at policy level.

Working with partners:

for example, acknowledging the strength of pooling resources, expertise and experience, actively seeking partnerships with organisations whose approach and goals complement our own, building local capacity.

Working with supporters:

for example, encouraging a commitment to challenge the causes of poverty; raising awareness of children's rights and the obligations of the international community; reporting back to sponsors and other donors honestly and regularly.

Developing our own capacity:

for example, strengthening our monitoring and evaluation systems, being open and accountable for the impact of our work, taking account of risks in the planning and implementation of our programs; encouraging learning, personal development and training.

By working with a wide range of groups, we aim to strengthen the impact of our programs. Much of the work falls into the following areas:

Building relationships
The right to listen and be heard
'Before, when I saw a street child, I would feel nothing. Now I understand. I feel a certain responsibility for that child.' In a small town in northwest Haiti, children and parents are learning new ways to relate to each other, thanks to a half-hour radio programme supported by Plan.

Education
The right to learn 'Now I can learn and contribute to my family.' In India Plan is encouraging disabled children to learn through creativity.

Livelihood
The right to an income 'Now we can pay school fees and buy pencils and exercise books for our children.' If a family's income is increased, its children can be better provided for. In Nepal, Plan's seed distribution project is increasing the income of local farmers.

Health
The right to grow up healthy 'When women understand the reasons behind certain health conditions, they are more likely to seek professional help.' An innovative health project in Senegal is using a traditional game to help reduce the maternal and infant mortality rate.

Habitat
The right to a decent place to live 'Thanks to the rainwater storage tank, my children no longer have to drink dirty water.'
In Choco, Colombia, new storage tanks are helping to create a better habitat for local people by ensuring a constant supply of clean drinking water.
