Plan is helping many thousands of families in the provinces of Aklan, Masbate and Samar in The Philippines to rebuild their lives following typhoon Frank which swept through the Philippines from June 19-21, 2008 causing widespread death and destruction.
Irish Aid, the Irish Government's overseas aid and development Department, is funding this work to the tune of €99,750. Plan is providing health care and water and sanitation services, distributing food and rebuilding infrastructure, especially schools. The funding from Irish Aid will provide some 3,000 families with emergency food assistance.
Children are usually the worst affected when disaster strikes, their lives can be thrown into turmoil and it is important that some semblance of normality can be restored as quickly as possible. The Irish Aid money will help to achieve this by funding a Plan distribution of emergency school packs to 8,630 children and teaching materials to 300 teachers.
Plan is working with local community leaders, agencies, authorities, teachers, schools and children’s groups to ensure effective distribution of the relief items and also to increase awareness of disaster mitigation methods.
