El Salvador
El Salvador, the smallest of the Central American republics, is the bridge between North and South America. The country’s economy is based on agriculture. The main crops are corn, beans, sorghum, bananas and fruits.
A typical house in the rural area of El Salvador is known as a baharque. Houses either have mud walls with wooden rods inserted or built using clay blocks placed one on top of the other.
Plan’s work
Our projects in El Salvador usually concentrate on providing education, health and housing. Because violence and conflict have been widespread in the country’s recent history, all of our projects revolve in some way around the theme of ‘a culture of peace’. Plan is also active in emergencies and reconstruction in the aftermath of disasters such as Hurricane Stan in 2005.
