Plan in Indonesia

Education is compulsory for children aged 6–15, yet enrolment is still low. Although the government is able to subsidise a small amount of the cost of education, the costs of books, clothing and travel are a burden for many families. This is especially true in the rural areas, where parents depend on their children to help in the fields and at home. Approximately 40% of the population are estimated to live below the poverty line.

Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for over 50% of the population in Indonesia. While rubber is the country's chief export crop, other major exports include oil and gas, plywood and textiles. Important crops include rice, bananas, coffee and the coconut palm. Most farmers work as labourers on plantations.

Following the St Stephen's Day tsunami in 2004, Plan opened a program unit in Banda Aceh focusing on long term relief and reconstruction. The following are the key aspects of Plan's work in Indonesia:

Growing up healthy: ensuring children’s survival, protection and healthy development

Learning: helping children, youth and adults learn and develop life skills

Habitat: building secure, safe and healthy environments for children

Livelihood: improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security
