Plan in Vietnam
Vietnam's economic transition over the last decade has improved the lives of the nation's children, and brought about important achievements in health, education, and gender equity. However, much of the country remains poor, particularly in rural areas in the highland provinces, the central region and among marginalised groups. Around 80% of the population lives in villages, most working as rice farmers on small land holdings.
Today, many Vietnamese children are still vulnerable to the effects of poverty. Malnutrition levels remain very high and the quality of education is still lacking.
Plan's work
Plan is now carrying out programs in preschool and basic education and supporting nutrition, reproductive health and primary healthcare programs in order to improve access to education and healthcare in Vietnam.
The increasing vulnerability of Vietnamese children is being addressed through an ambitious 'children in need of special protection' program, along with programs in disaster management and landmines.
Other work includes programs to improve sanitation and access to clean water, and to build solidarity among Plan families, sponsored communities and donors. Plan is also tackling the causes of low employment and productivity among the poor through a series of livelihood and reforestation programs.
