Togo
Togo is a West African country located on the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. The primary source of livelihood is subsistence agriculture, which is practiced by 73% of the population.
Islam, Christianity and traditional beliefs are practised in Togo. Traditional medicine, as well as invocation of good and evil spirits, is popular throughout the country. Belief in the powers of sorcery and magic are almost universal in villages and widespread among the educated community.
Housing in rural Togo reflects both the prevailing social customs and people's financial capabilities. Almost all houses are made of sun-dried earth bricks and plastered with mud, and the roofs are made of straw. In the capital city of Lome, and in some urban towns, most houses are made of cement blocks, and the roofs are plastered or made of bricks or corrugated iron sheets.
Plan’s work
Plan has been working in Sotouboua and other regions of Togo since 1987. Our major challenges in this region are improvements in health, general living conditions and the provision of educational and training facilities.
